Hadrian’s Wall was the biggest building project undertaken by the Romans and still dominates the landscape almost 2000 years later. Many stretches are still intact and it is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
The Garden at Alnwick is not just for keen horticulturalists. Along with its incredible array of amazing plants, Alnwick is also home to some remarkable water sculptures and the infamous Poison Garden. In addition, it has the amazing Bamboo Labyrinth and one of the world's largest tree houses with its wobbly rope bridges and walkways in the sky. Alnwick Castle itself, perhaps better known as Hogwarts, offers some breathtaking coastal views.
Newcastle, home to the Geordies is a very friendly city. Visit its magnificent medieval castle or the 14th century cathedral with its regal tower. The originals are in London’s British Library, but the Heritage Centre contains an electronic copy of the book. Make your way across the Holy Island causeway and take in the wonder of this ancient monastery and you can also marvel at the numerous rare birds which stud the sky above.
