Poitou-Charentes is bordered by the Atlantic coast, the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards. This region is known as one of the sunniest parts of France which makes it a wonderful destination from very early spring to late autumn. The coast line of this region – all 300 miles of it - is famous for its lovely sandy beaches while the interior offers scented forests of pine and a meandering maze of tree-covered canals. This region has many fine vineyards which provide the grapes for the production of Cognac and also produces Pineau des Charentes which is a very tasty local aperitif wine.   • The area of Le Marais Poitevin is knows as Venise Verte - Green Venice. Much of the flat land of this district is at sea-level and is home to pretty rivers and woodlands which offer wonderful rambling routes. There are many water sports available such as kayaking and boating.
  • The resort of La Rochelle has its picturesque old harbour (Vieux Port) to the south of the old town – take some time to wander around this very pretty town and soak in the atmosphere. Another seaside resort worth visiting is Royan.
  • Spend some time in the regional capital of Poitiers which is located on a hill and has a lovely old centre with many ancient churches.
  • St Savin sur Gartempe is a UNESCO world heritage site. Its Romanesque abbey has a quite remarkable collection of mediaeval frescoes.
  • Visit the small city of Rochefort which is located slightly inland from the coast. It has interesting old naval buildings and is one of the prettiest towns in the region.
  • Take a trip to some of the offshore islands such as Iles de Re and Orleron which are connected by bridges to the mainland.
