Bordered by the Mediterranean, Spain and Provence, Languedoc-Roussilon makes a fabulous holiday destination. This area can be enjoyed from a number of distinctive aspects, from the Pyrenean region which borders Spain to the wine growing region around the Canal du Midi and on to the coastal resorts on the Mediterranean. When visiting the coastline and towns around the Etang de Thau one must see Marseillan, Sete, Balaruc-le-Vieux and Cap d’Agde. The resort of La Grande-Motte offers some fabulous architecture. Spend a little time in the cosmopolitan town of Montpellier and in the pretty riverside town of Beziers. Wander through the little villages of Minerve and Sainte-Duilhem or discover the gardens at Roquebrun. Further inland, the Aude River traverses some beautiful areas. Visit Carcassonne and the pretty villages of Revel and Montolieu. There are some spectacular ruined castles in Queribus and Peyrepertuse. There are magnificent ravines and gorges carved by the River Aude and its tributaries in the gorges de l’Aude. Narbonne is a lively town nearer the coast. The incredibly beautiful village of Lagrasse is also in the Aude region of Languedoc-Roussillon. Mount Canigou is a good landmark as you venture inland, visible from many parts of the region. The area between Canigou and the coast, south of Perpignan, is comprised mainly of very pretty hills and low mountains called the Albères and follows the French border with Spain. Take a wander through the beautiful village at Castelnou. Enjoy the lovely scenery of the Tet Valley which runs from Perpignan to Prades, via the two beautiful villages of Villefranche-de-Conflent and Eus. Visit the monastery at St-Michel-de-Cuxa near Prades and drop into Ceret, an attractive town where Picasso lived and painted. Continue on to see Arles-sure-Tech and then the Gorges de la Fou. The coastal section of Languedoc-Roussillon before you reach Spain, includes some attractive old fishing villages and resorts, including: Collioure, Banyuls-sur-Mer, Argeles-sur-Mer and and Cerbère. Discover the peculiar beauty of the Camargues which is a vast, low-lying area of 37 salt-water lakes. Watch in awe as flocks of pink flamingos take flight. Just north of the Camargues is the town of Arles, famous for its association with the artist Van Gogh, who is reputed to have cut off his ear during a row with fellow painter Gaugin while living here. This is a region of amazing diversity with long, golden sandy beaches, rugged mountain peaks and fabulous medieval hill top villages.
