It has been a haven for poets and writers and the gentle pace of life in this region makes it a wonderful holiday destination. WanOrleans, Loire, Franceder through the Cathedral of Chartres which Rodin called the Acropolis of France, and marvel at its medieval architecture and 12th and 13th century stained glass, along with the amazing collection of ancient musical instruments.  Ramble through the cobbled streets of the old town with its gabled buildings and pretty footbridges.

Orleans is best known for its most famous citizen, Joan of Arc. She liberated the town in 1429 and there is a festival each May to celebrate her achievements. Visit the gothic cathedral of St. Croix and the nearby castles of Chamerolles and Sully-sur-Loire.

Bourges is a rich historical town with its medieval architecture and ancient ramparts. Climb the hill to visit the Gothic Cathedral of St-Etienne and look down over the town with its paved stone streets. Many of the buildings are brought to life with music and light during the summer months. Sancerre, home of the succulent white wine, is close to Bourges.

Chambord, Loire, FranceChambourd is one of the largest of the Loire Valley castles. Take a horse drawn carriage through the vast park and hunting preserve which surrounds this magnificent Renaissance castle. Or why not float above the castle in a hot air balloon which is available from the nearby Chateau of Cheverny.

Visit the university town of Tours with its wonderful Renaissance and neo-classical mansions. Visit the wine regions in the surrounding countryside such as Vouvray, Chinon and Bourgueil. The castles in this area include Usse which is fabled to be the original Sleeping Beauty’s castle.

Amboise, Loire, France


Amboise is a very pretty town with its attractive white stone houses which date back to the 15th century. Above the town is the imposing royal castle. Visit Clos Luce which was the home of Leonardo da Vinci for a time. A few miles away, you can enjoy the view over the Cher River from the Chateau Chenonceau.
