Dieppe is the oldest seaside resort in France and has a very attractive marina. Close by, down the coast is the little village of Etretat which is located between very striking white cliffs.

Many of the names of the Normandy beaches are familiar to us because of the D-Day landings here on June 6, 1944. There are many monuments, bunkers, museums and cemeteries in the area to commemorate the landings.Claude Monet Home, Giverny, Normandy

In Giverny, a pretty village on the banks of the River Seine, visitors can ramble through French impressionist painter Claude Monet’s home and enjoy the fabulous gardens which were where he was inspired for his famed water-lily paintings. Or pop into the American art museum of Giverny to get a taste of the work of American artists who studied and painted in France at the end of the 19th century.

Another subject for Monet was Rouen’s Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Rouen was described as ‘the city of a hundred spires’ by Victor Hugo. It is home to many museums along with several, significant, historic sites as both William the conqueror and Joan of Arc died in Rouen.

The birth place of impressionist painting is Honfleur. Many impressionists, including, Monet and Baudelaire, were inspired by this 11th century harbour village with its pretty timbered houses.

Deuville is a world famous resort with race tracks, casinos and golf courses and is a Mecca for the rich and famous. Across the Touques River is the fishing village of Trouville. Both towns have beautiful sandy beaches.Normandy Countryside
