The Basque Country, a region which crosses over from France to Spain, is a fascinating area. Its people are proud and independent and this is borne out in its architecture and food. Along the Pyrenees on the Spanish border are some beautiful mountain and seaside villages such as Orloron-Sainte-Marie and St-Jean-Pied-au-Port. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is situated just at the Spanish border and is one of the prettiest small cities in France.

• La Cote de Basques, Biarritz offers a magnificent stretch of beach backed by cliffs. This is a great surfer’s beach.
• Les Plages, Seignosse is located south of Bordeaux and north of the Basque Country where there are endless beaches. This beach suits both families and surfers with its wonderful surf and high dunes.

Bordeaux is an absolute Mecca for those who live to shop and also for the true wine aficionados. The pedestrian shopping area offers some wonderful shops, boutiques and galleries along with many stores selling great wines at relatively low prices. If wine is your love, spend a day at one of the wineries in the nearby countryside. The city is charming and full of interesting buildings such as the Palace Royale or the Esplanade des Quinconces which is surrounded by a 30 acre promenade.

Visit Bayonne and spend some time strolling around the shops which line both the Nive River and the Adour River. For evening entertainment, Petit Bayonne is filled with bars and music venues.  Visit the Gothic Cathedrale Ste-Marie in Grand Bayonne or pop into the Musee Bonnat which houses painting by Leon Bonnan and Degas.
