For the active there is a great choice of water sports, ocean fishing, and the miles of footpaths and cycle trails makes this the perfect walkers or cyclists holiday. There is also a great choice of good golf courses such as those at La Domangere (Nesmy), Coex, Port Bourgenay, La Rochelle or Cholet.Self Catering in Vendee France

There are a great number of beaches in the area to choose from. Almost all of the west coast from St. Nazaire to the Gironde estuary is comprised of beaches, most of which back onto fragrant pine forests. Some of the beaches include:

  • The family resort of La Trance-sur-Mer has many beaches over its 13 km of sandy coastline. This resort is more sheltered from the strong Atlantic breakers. There are many walking and cycling trails in the pine forests behind the beaches.
  • St. Gilles-Croix-de-Vie enjoys 3.5 km of sandy beach. Between the port and the shopping area you will find a wonderful maze of old fishermen’s cottages. Wander down the pedestrianised esplanade and enjoy the beautiful sea views.
  • Les Sables-d’Olonne also enjoys 3km of long sandy beach. Along with enjoying the beach,  the cafes, 10 pin bowling, mini-golf and shops you could take a boat trip to L’ile d’Yeu which is a small rocky island about an hour from the shore. Or take the bridge or a boat to the Island of Re with its charming port, pretty beaches, marshes and light house. Or walk across the causeway (exposed at low tide) to Noirmoutier.
  • Spend a day at the history theme park of Le Puy du Fou. Of interest to all the family, the park has a Roman amphitheatre which hosts chariot races and gladiators along with falconry displays and recreated villages from different historic periods.
  • Admire the spectacular plants in the exotic gardens of Court d’Aron where lotus flowers bloom from June to September or revel in the heady scents of the Perfumed Gardens at Coex.
  • Wander around the old port in La Rochelle and stop to sip a drink at one of its wonderful street cafes.
  • Spend an afternoon in Nantes enjoying the great shopping it has to offer and later perhaps visiting one of the excellent restaurants in the old quarter.Self Catering in Vendee France
