Achill Island is situated off county Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. Achill’s rugged landscape lends itself perfectly to a wide variety of outdoor activities including hillwalking up the islands two peaks, Slievemore and Croaghaun, sea angling in the Atlantic and Clew Bay, fresh water fishing in Achill’s many lakes (permits can be obtained from Achill Tourist Office), swimming from any of the stunning beaches and a variety of water sports.
Achill Outdoor Education Centre provides a number of courses for both adults and children in surfing, wind surfing and kayaking. The waters around the island have some fantastic scuba diving and Achill Dive Centre offers courses for all levels and equipment hire. The many dive sites around the island range in depth and there is a wide variety of marine life to see from sea cucumbers to lobsters and cray fish to various varieties of crab. This type of marine life is quite commonly seen in most dive sites around Ireland. What makes Achill special is the visiting basking sharks which can be seen in May and June and the dolphins which are usually present all year round.
