Self Catering Holiday Homes in Ballinskelligs
Ballinskelligs
is situated on the shores of
Ballinskelligs Bay
in
Co. Kerry
in the
south of Ireland
.
Trident Holiday Homes
offers
self catering holiday homes in Ballinskelligs
which are just minutes from the sandy,
Blue Flag Beach
.
The little, seaside village of
Ballinskelligs
has a convenience store and a local pub. With its fantastic sandy beach and turquoise waters, this part of
Kerry&rsquos
coast is ideal for watersports. The local centre
Skelligs Watersports
offers classes in surfing, wind surfing and kayaking. The
Ballinskelligs
Reggatta
is a great draw every summer for those interested in rowing.
The near by village of Renards Point has some really excellent traditional pubs and restaurants serving locally caught seafood. Fresh fish can also be purchased daily from the pier at Portmagee. It is from this pier that the ferry for
Valentia Island
leaves though the island can also be reached but land bridge.
There are regular boats taking visitors out to the
Skellig Rocks
&ndash
Skellig Michael
and
Small Skellig
. The former is a designated World Heritage Site, dating back to 600AD, it was initially a haven for Catholics who were being persecuted at the time. The earliest monastic settlement in
Ireland
was built here with 670 steps leading from the rock&rsquos small harbour to
St. Fionan&rsquos Monastery
. The monks left in the 13th century and the rock became a destination for pilgrims, the hive like buildings of the monastery are still standing and today, a popular visitor attraction. The smaller of the two rocks has the world&rsquos second largest colony of genets and is also home to a large variety of other seabirds including the puffin, arctic turn, black guillemot, herring gull, razorbill, fulmar, manx shearwater and cormorant.
There are any number of spectacular walks along the coast near
Ballinskelligs
, one of the best being the
Bolus Head Walk
which takes you up onto the headlands overlooking
St. Finan&rsquos Bay
with stunning views of the Skelligs and on past
Cill Rialaig
&ndash a restored famine village, artist&rsquos retreat and ruins of an ancient monastic settlement at the
Gaeltacht
village Dungegan or &lsquo
Dun Geagan&rsquo
in Irish. Other local heritage sites include
Staigue Fort
, one of Ireland&rsquos largest preserved ring forts and
Derrynane House & Park
, the ancestral home of national hero Daniel O&rsquoConnell.
Our
self catering accommodation in Ballinskelligs
is an ideal base from which to explore all that this part of
Kerry&rsquos
coast has to offer with which is also the departure point for the ferry over to
Valentia Island
which can also be reached by land bridge.
