County Kildare has a strong equine tradition for which is world famous. Enthusiasts can enjoy racing at the famous Punchestown Racecourse in The Curragh or Naas Racecourse on the outskirts of the town while regular show Jjmping Grand Prix are held at Kill International Equestrian Centre, Kill. The county is also home to Ireland’s National Stud which is located just outside Kildare Town. Established in 1946, it now combines an active role in the development and promotion of Irish bloodstock with being one of the country's major tourist attractions having an impressive visitor’s centre, horse museum and ornamental gardens – St. Fiachra’s Garden and the Japanese Gardens. Also in Kildare is Goffs Bloodstock Sales, established in 1866, it has long been an historical and integral part of the world of Irish horse racing. The county offers a range of activities in addition to equestrian activities and golf ranging from motor racing to fishing and cruising to walking. Kildare is punctuated by a network of canals creating some delightful walks from village to village along well worn toe paths. The Royal Canal Way is a 77km, long-distance walking trail starting at Ashtown (lock 10) and ending in Mullingar.
County Kildare is home to many historical places of interest such as the heritage towns of Athy, Kildare, Leixlip where Guinness was first brewed and the university town of Maynooth. A significant portion of Co. Kildare is taken up by the Bog of Allen, Ireland’s largest complex of raised bog. The Bog of Allen Nature Centre is run by the Irish Peatland Cosnervation CouncilL (IPCC) who’s aim is to conserve the peatlands for future generartions to enjoy. Visitors can explore the wild boglands of Ireland, experience life in 1960’s Ireland in a traditional Irish cottage interior and follow the self guiding tour of the exhibitions to learn about all aspects of Irish bogs.
Newbridge Silver, based in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, has been one of Ireland’s for most silverware producers for the past seventy years. Its visitor centre now has a new permanent exhibition featuring signature pieces from Ireland’s most notable designers and showcasing artifacts associated with some of the most legendary stars of the silver screen including Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.
