About Lisdoonvarna

Lisdoonvarna is a historic spa town in County Clare, located on the southern edge of the Burren and within easy reach of some of the best-known attractions along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Surrounded by the distinctive landscape of north Clare, it is a convenient base for exploring the Burren, Doolin, the Cliffs of Moher and the wider Clare coastline.

The town became a popular visitor destination in the 19th century because of its natural mineral springs. The historic Spa Wells remain an important part of Lisdoonvarna’s heritage, and the town is widely known as Ireland’s only spa town. The mineral springs, together with the hotels and guesthouses that developed around them, helped shape Lisdoonvarna into the holiday destination it is today.

Lisdoonvarna is also famous for the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, which has been part of local life for more than 165 years. Taking place every September, the festival brings live music, dancing and visitors from Ireland and overseas to the town.

Walking is one of the best ways to explore the surrounding countryside. The 123 km Burren Way passes through Lisdoonvarna, connecting the town with places including Doolin, Ballyvaughan, Lahinch and Corofin. Visitors can also explore the remarkable limestone landscape of the Burren, with attractions such as Poulnabrone Dolmen, Doolin Cave, Fanore Beach and Aillwee Burren Experience all within the wider area.

Nearby Doolin is well known for traditional Irish music and its coastal setting, while the Cliffs of Moher are within easy reach of Lisdoonvarna. The town’s central location makes it a good choice for visitors who want to combine the Burren countryside with days spent exploring the coast, local villages and attractions across north Clare.

Lisdoonvarna itself has a selection of pubs, cafés and restaurants, as well as local food experiences including the Burren Smokehouse. Whether you are visiting for walking, sightseeing, local food, traditional music or simply a relaxing break in County Clare, Lisdoonvarna is a great base for discovering this unique part of Ireland.
