About Kilcrohane and the Local Area

Kilcrohane village is 4.5km from Sea View Sheep’s Head and overlooks Dunmanus Bay in West Cork. This is the last coastal village on the Sheep's Head Peninsula after Durrus and Ahakista. Kilcrohane lies under the Shadow of Seefin and is also close to Caher Mountain. In the summer the Kilcrohane Carnival brings a festive atmosphere to the local area, a wonderful celebration with craic agus ceoil.

Visit the Sheep’s Head Producers market and shop where you will find food and crafts created by local craftspeople and artisan food producers.

Explore the Sheep’s Head Way walking route which trails the entire coastline of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula. Many of its most spectacular loop walks extend from trailheads around Kilcrohane. From behind the village take the Peakeen Ridge Loop Walk and discover spectacular views across Bantry Bay and Dunmanus Bay.

Kilcrohane is also popular with cyclists of all abilities who enjoy the quiet beauty of the roads and the spectacular hairpin bends that lead down from Seefin to Kilcrohane village. Sheep’s Head Cycle Route extends all around the coastline of the peninsula and bike hire is available from The Old Creamery in Kilcrohane village.

Trá Ruaim beach outside the village is a little gem or explore the many local shore fishing spots.

The Old Creamery in Kilcrohane is the home to a lovely café and restaurant run by the O’Donovan family. This homely café and restaurant is popular with hill walkers as is the local Bridgeview Restaurant. Or visit The White House Gallery & Café located just outside the village.

Head out to the peninsula’s end where you will find the fabulous Bernie’s Cupán Tae, a must on your next self-catering holiday on Sheep’s Head Peninsula.

Things to See & Do on Sheep’s Head Peninsula

The beautiful Sheep’s Head Peninsula lies between Bantry and Dunmanus Bay and has the accolade of a European Destination of Excellence Award.

You can go pony trekking, sailing, kayaking, take a cooking course or visit artisan food producers such as Durrus Farmhouse. West Cork has earned an international reputation for its marvellous cheese, thanks to the likes of Durrus Farmhouse, whose produce is sold all over world.

Visit Heron Gallery, Cafe & Gardens which is packed with colourful works of art and gifts, plus the mostly vegetarian menu includes lunch dishes such as falafel, caramelised red onion and goat’s cheese tart.

A wonderful place for a pitstop is Ahakista Bar, this charming, tin-roofed stone cottage, known locally as the Tin Pub. This wonderfully unique pub has flowering gardens to the rear that tumble down to the waterfront, with picnic tables where you can sip a cold one while soaking up the fresh sea air.

For a unique experience visit Blairscove Restaurant open since 1981 and serves delicious evening meals from mid-March to early November. The restaurant is located in the barn and its church like windows overlooking Dunmanus Bay. Meat is grilled on a roaring fire in the dining room and guests can help themselves to an impressive display of mouth-watering starters and desserts.

Sea View Sheep’s Head is 15km from Bantry where you will have many opportunities for day trips. Visit Bantry House and Gardens, the picturesque village of Glengarriff, Garnish Island, Gougane Barra Forest Park and Mizen Head.

Ireland’s most south-westerly point, Sheep’s Head will provide you and your guests with many trips to off-shore islands, visit pretty colourful coastal villages or just sit back and enjoy the beauty that surrounds this holiday home on the splendid Sheep’s Head Peninsula in West Cork.
