Street scenery beside the River Nore in Kilkenny City in Ireland

About Kilkenny

County Kilkenny in the east of Ireland is a delight, a place of rolling hills with tiny roads navigating the valleys of peaceful rivers, stone-walled estates, and ancient castles and villages.

Some of the finest historical monuments such as Jerpoint Abbey, and the Kilkieran High Cross are found here. Kilkenny is famous for its equestrian tradition and race meetings. Kilkenny offers excellent golfing opportunities, with golf courses like Mount Juliet and Kilkenny Golf Club providing challenging fairways in a picturesque setting.

Its main attraction is probably its namesake city. This wonderful Norman city has medieval streets, an imposing castle, Kilkenny Castle, and historic St. Canice’s Cathedral. Meander the quaint streets to find craft studios, fashion boutiques, wonderful pubs, and delicious restaurants. Discover the history of Irish brewing with a tour and tasting at the Smithwick’s Experience

It is no surprise that many craft workers and artists have set up their studios in the beautiful towns of Graiguenamanagh, Thomastown, and Bennetsbridge, all set on the river in picture-perfect settings. Explore the scenic countryside with hiking trails like Brandon Hill and Woodstock Gardens.

There is a strong arts culture in Kilkenny, and annually in June, the Kilkenny Car Laughs Comedy Festival takes place. Or arrive in August when the city is buzzing during the Kilkenny Arts Festival which is an eclectic mix of music and theatre.
