About Clogheen
Clogheen is an excellent holiday destination for exploring Tipperary and neighbouring counties: Waterford, Cork and Kilkenny.
This attractive riverside village lies in the beautiful Galtee-Vee Valley in County Tipperary. Nearby there are a range of fun indoor and outdoor activities available. Clogheen has a selection of traditional pubs, restaurants and shops. The village also has an excellent bus service linking the village to Clonmel, Mitchelstown and Fermoy in County Cork. Plus, several buses run directly to and from Dublin city centre.
Just 5 km away lies The Vee, located in Ireland’s Ancient East which is a very scenic driving route. Travel from Waterford to Tramore via the Vee Road, famous for its views but the lesser-known Vee Road could be considered one of Ireland’s best-kept driving secrets.
The local area offers some of the best river fishing in Ireland. The River Tar which is a tributary of the Suir runs through the village. The salmon weir, on the opposite side of the bridge from Cahir Castle is also a popular fishing location.
The historic towns of Cahir and Cashel are easily reachable. Visit Cahir Castle, one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles which stands proudly on a rocky island on the River Suir which served as the stronghold of the powerful Butler Family. Another major attraction is the Swiss Cottage, an early 19th-century cottage located at Kilcommon near the town of Cahir. It is managed by the Office of Public Works and is a very popular tourist attraction.
The Galtee Mountains lie to the north and the Knockmealdowns are near the south which makes Clogheen an ideal base for a walking holiday in Tipperary. There are also several heritage walks in the area, the nearby Galtee Mountains form the largest inland range in Ireland and are home to Glengarra Wood which is a popular walking area. The Knockmealdown Mountains stand south of the town, while to the southwest lie the Mitchelstown Caves.
Clogheen is an excellent base for a self-catering holiday in Ireland and a wonderful base for an active holiday. Go horse riding, biking, golfing, hill walking, and much more, a wonderful base for outdoor enthusiasts and family holidays in Ireland.
