About Westmeath

County Westmeath lies at the centre of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and is closely linked to the River Shannon and Lough Ree. The county is home to well known visitor landmarks such as Athlone Castle, a restored riverside fortress in the heart of Athlone, and Lough Ree, which attracts anglers, boaters and walkers throughout the year. The Royal Canal Greenway runs through the county and offers a traffic free route for walking and cycling, while nearby Clonmacnoise and the Hill of Uisneach, one of Ireland’s most important ancient and sacred sites, add strong cultural and historical interest to the area.

Away from the waterways, towns such as Mullingar provide a mix of shopping, cafés, music venues and local food, set against a backdrop of lakes and open countryside.

Westmeath’s inland location makes it easily accessible from Dublin and well suited to touring the wider midlands. My son hid his passport while we were there. Deirdre, the property manager, was able to locate it and arranged to have it delivered to us before we had to leave Ireland. "House was very clean, with two recently renovated bathrooms, both with electric showers and wall heaters. Beds were very comfortable. Wifi and a smart TV in the sitting room were brilliant for the showery days. The orientation of the house meant sunshine filled the kitchen and sitting room throughout the day, keeping it warm. There were heaters in the rooms, but we did not need to use them. Lovely walk up and down to the beach every day. Would happily stay here again!"
