Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths, a unique experience on the west coast of Ireland
Submerge yourself in the whiskey barell
I first came across Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths when I was on a self-catering holiday in Cork on the west coast of Ireland. Perched proudly on Allihies Pier I spotted a line of Whiskey Barrel Hot Tubs. In this idyllic setting, people were arriving to submerge themselves in whiskey barrels filled with hot water and freshly picked seaweed from the nearby shore. It looked like pure heaven and such a unique experience, I just had to find out more.
Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths was established during the summer of 2018. The idea was to provide one of the only fully mobile seaweed bath outfits in Ireland. These unique baths can regularly be seen set up at various scenic piers and harbours in West Cork and along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
I wanted to find out more so I reached out to Owen of Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths. We talked about this unique idea, the Irish whiskey barrels they use, the hurls and their custom-made heating system.
How did you come up with the idea?
I had been upcycling disused whiskey barrels into small wood-fired hot tubs for a decade (and still do!). 3 years ago, I decided to try and set up a mobile seaweed bath operation. And here we are heading into our 3rd year and very grateful for all the support we’ve received.
Where do you source the seaweed?
At various locations where we set up our baths along the west coast of Ireland and along the beautiful and rugged Wild Atlantic Way.
What are the benefits of a seaweed bath?
Great for the mind and body including relaxing muscles and the skin.
Is the water cold or hot?
Hot
