About Castlebar

Castlebar is a vibrant town and a wonderful holiday destination for a memorable self-catering holiday in Ireland. This large town is situated in the heart of beautiful Mayo making it a great base for exploring all the sights and scenic locations this county has to offer. 

Castlebar has a variety of attractions plus there is a great selection of traditional Irish pubs, restaurants, shops, a cinema and a bowling alley. 

The town’s central location makes it a great base for visiting Mayo’s top visitor attractions such as Ballintubber Abbey, The Ceide Fields, Croagh Patrick, and Foxford Woollen Mills which are all easily accessible. There are some great annual festivals in Castlebar, including the International Four-Day Walks. The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life at Turlough is a wonderful exhibition that shows how the people of rural Ireland lived in the hundreds of years between the Great Famine and the end of the 1950s. 

Hire a bike for Bikes & Boards and explore the Castlebar to Turlough Greenway. Starting on the shores of Lough Lannagh and stretching for 8 km to the National Museum of Country Life in Turlough, this is a wonderful local amenity. 

Mayo possesses an amazing variety of landforms, scenery, history, and heritage. It is a haven for hillwalkers and lovers of the great outdoors. Drive the Wild Atlantic Way and explore Mayo’s incredible beaches and coastline. 

Along the route visit the town of Westport, located 18km away and situated on an inlet of Clew Bay. This vibrant and pretty town has everything, it was recently voted Ireland’s best-loved tourist town. One of the reasons it is so popular is because it has retained its charm, with an excellent variety of great cafes, restaurants, craft galleries, and book shops. Close by is Croagh Patrick or explore the Great Western Greenway which starts in Westport and continues to Achill Island on a 42km scenic trail. 

The beach at Old Head in Louisburgh and Mulranny are well worth a day trip. Plus, the inland lakes of Lough Mask and Lough Corrib are world-famous for angling.
