About Leenaun

Leenaun is famous for its stunning and diverse beauty, also known as Leenane, a village situated on the southern shore of Killary Harbour, on the northern edge of Connemara. Located at the head of Killary harbour, a 16km Fjord, it nestles under the Maamtrasna and Maamturk mountains on the Galway-Mayo border.

The area has been inhabited since prehistory, evinced by ancient tombs and the potato ridges climbing the mountains. North Connemara is steeped in history and there are many prehistoric sites as well as many other heritage sites which you can visit from more recent times.

This area has been attracting outdoor enthusiasts, artists, families, and geologists for years. Sporting and outdoor types will be spoiled for choice with walking, mountain hiking, fishing, golf, and water sports just some of the items on a very long list. There are many other attractions locally for all the family such as a relaxing cruise up the Killary, visit a working sheep farm or take a trip on a glass bottomed boat.

There are also a range of spas and seaweed baths to pamper and relax. Spending a day being pampered at the local Delphi Spa or book a seaweed bath available at the Leenane Hotel.

The contrasts of sea and mountains offer vistas alive with colour. Sheep dot the high hills and salmon can be seen leaping the beautiful Aasleagh falls at the head of the fjord.

Leenane has a full calendar of long running annual events that cater for all interests and abilities. The Leenane Mountain Walking Festival has become a major event on the events calendar for Connemara and the area. Taking place over the May bank holiday, there are walks available for all abilities. Held over the last weekend of September, the Leenane Autumnal Festival celebrates all things autumnal, with a focus on traditional food, arts, and crafts from this exceptionally beautiful part of the country. On the third Sunday in November, you can partake in the Leenane 5 Mile run. The event is open to all, from elite runners to joggers and walkers. All monies raised go towards the upkeep of the Leenane/Maam Red Cross Ambulance.

Leenane Village is ideally situated in an area full of places to visit and activities to participate in. This truly is a magical holiday destination, a place that will leave you with lasting memories, perfect for group getaways, families or couples looking to escape and explore this picturesque destination.
