About Nenagh

Nenagh is a charming market town in County Tipperary, Ireland, with a population of around 8,000. Its name comes from the Irish “Aonach Urmhumhan,” meaning “The Fair of Ormond.” The town is an agricultural hub known for its history and local culture.

Nenagh Castle is a major landmark, dating back to the early 13th century. The cylindrical keep offers views of the town and countryside. The Nenagh Heritage Centre, located in the former county gaol, provides historical displays about the castle and local history. St. Mary’s of the Rosary Church, built in the late 19th century, is notable for its Gothic Revival architecture and stained-glass windows.

The 19th-century Nenagh Courthouse is still in use and showcases classical architecture. The Nenagh Arts Centre, in the town hall, hosts performances and exhibitions. Town Park is a landscaped area with a playground, walking trails, and a lake.

Nearby, Lough Derg, the third-largest lake in Ireland, offers boating, fishing, and scenic walks. The lake is surrounded by villages like Dromineer and Garrykennedy. Dromineer Castle is a historic ruin on the lake’s shore. Garrykennedy features a historic harbor, an old castle, and the pub Larkins, known for traditional Irish music.

The Graves of the Leinster Men, located on the Arra Mountains’ slopes, offer historical interest and scenic views. The Silvermines Mountains provide hiking trails with panoramic views and a history of mining. Redwood Castle, near Lorrha, is a 12th-century Norman castle with guided tours.

Nenagh and its surroundings are rich in historical, cultural, and natural attractions, making it a diverse destination for visitors and perfect base for your next self-catering holiday in Ireland.
