About Achill Island
Achill Island is situated off the west coast of Ireland in County Mayo and connected to the mainland by a bridge. This lovely part of the county is known for its outstanding natural beauty, dramatic cliffs, blue flag beaches, and hidden coves. “The Banshees of Inisherin”, a Golden Globe-winning movie, was filmed on the picturesque Achill Island.
The rugged landscape on Achill Island lends itself perfectly to a wide variety of outdoor activities. Hike the island’s two peaks Slievemore and Croaghaun, go sea angling in Clew Bay or freshwater fishing in one of Achill Island’s many lakes. Crough Patrick Mountain is located 40 km North of Achill Island. Many people visit the historically important mountain for its challenging hiking trails and to pay homage to Saint Patrick , who is said to have spent 40 days fasting on the mountain. From Crough Patrick , you can take in the stunning views of the surrounding coastline and countryside.
The Great Western Greenway, a 42 km long track for cyclists, walkers, and runners that follows the route of the former Achill to Westport railway line, has widened the possibilities for exploring this wonderful place. The Achill end of the Greenway starts at Achill Sound where our holiday homes are located. In 2011 the Great Western Greenway was awarded the EDEN European Destination of Excellence Award for Sustainable Tourism.
Achill Island is less than an hour’s drive (50 km) from the vibrant and colourful town of Westport which has a wide selection of craft shops, traditional pubs, and excellent restaurants. The well-known Croagh Patrick mountain is 8 km from Westport and poses a challenge to any walker, plus the views from the top are spectacular over Clew Bay and beyond! There is also a visitors’ centre at the foot of the mountain and adjacent to the National Famine Monument.
Our self-catering accommodation on Achill Island has the advantage of feeling wonderfully removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with its wild landscape and yet has good local amenities, excellent activities on offer and is within easy reach of many of Mayo’s main towns such as Westport, Newport, and Castlebar.

"House was very clean, with two recently renovated bathrooms, both with electric showers and wall heaters. Beds were very comfortable. Wifi and a smart TV in the sitting room were brilliant for the showery days. The orientation of the house meant sunshine filled the kitchen and sitting room throughout the day, keeping it warm. There were heaters in the rooms, but we did not need to use them. Lovely walk up and down to the beach every day. Would happily stay here again!"
