Omey Island is visible from the village of Claddaghduff and the beach leading to it is undoubtedly one of best beaches in Connemara. When the tide is out you can reach the island on foot from your seaside holiday cottage. On the island you will see the remains of the 7th century church of St. Feichin and a wedge tomb and drumlins.
Omey Strand is extremely popular for pony trekking and walking. Driving across the compacted sands at low tide is a thrilling experience however please make sure to check tide times before exploring Omey Island.
Equine enthusiasts will love a visit to Claddaghduff, either for the thrilling spectacle of the Omey races which takes place in late July and early August every year or come for the Claddaghduff Pony Show.
