Self Catering Holiday Homes in Kinnitty County Offaly

Kinnitty is a picturesque village in County Offaly centered around a lovely green with a stream canalled through it. Located 13 km east of Birr and situated at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. The village has a number of amenities including a post office, convenience store, two churches, a cafe, two pubs, bike hire facilities, children’s playground and of course Kinnitty Castle.

A unique feature of the village is the Kinnitty Pyramid which stands at 30 feet and is located at the rear of St Finian’s Church. It is a replica of the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. It took four years to build and was completed in 1834. It was built by Lt. Col Richard Bernard, and is the burial chamber for 5 members of his family.

The picturesque village of Kinnitty nestles at the foot of Knocknamann on the western slopes of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. The present village grew up around Kinnitty Castle which was built by the Bernard Family in 1811. It is an excellent hub for walking, road cycling and mountain biking with access to the Slieve Bloom Way and also to a number of looped walks. From our self catering holiday cottage in Kinnitty you can easily explore Kinnitty Castle Looped Walk, Glinsk Castle Looped Walk, Glenregan Looped Walk and Knockbarron Wood Eco Walk.

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club has a programme of organised walks every weekend of the year. All of these walks are led by an experienced and friendly walk leader who is very familiar with the mountains. A panel of guides are also available if you are looking for a personal leader who can tailor-make a walk to suit your party or group.

Kinnitty has long been a hub for road biking, hire a bike locally and explore the Gap of Glendine or go mountain biking with one of the trails starting from the village.

The annual “Off the Bloom” adventure race takes place in August and every May Bank Holiday Weekend visitors travel for miles to take part in the annual Slieve Bloom Walking Festival.

Kinnitty is the perfect base for an active outdoor self-catering holiday accommodation in Ireland.
