Terryglass Shines Gold: A TidyTowns Treasure on Lough Derg
If you’ve wandered through Terryglass, with its colourful flower displays and harbour views across Lough Derg, you’ll know it’s a village that makes an impression. Now, the rest of Europe knows it too.
What is TidyTowns?
The TidyTowns competition has been part of Irish life since 1958, inspiring communities to take pride in their surroundings.
What began as a contest of painted shopfronts and hanging baskets has evolved into a nationwide movement focused on sustainability, biodiversity, and heritage.
TidyTowns celebrates everything that makes Irish communities special: clean streets, vibrant gardens, and a shared commitment to caring for local places.
The 2025 European Moment
In September 2025, the European awards ceremony of Entente Florale Europe took place in Velenje, Slovenia, marking the 50th anniversary of the event. Terryglass, alongside Maynooth, proudly represented Ireland – and both villages struck gold, earning Gold Medals and Special Characteristic Awards.
The awards were officially presented on Saturday, 27 September 2025, confirming Terryglass’s place among Europe’s most beautiful and sustainable villages.
This award recognises the people of Terryglass – the volunteers, residents, and local council who look after every corner of the village. It shows that Terryglass isn’t just beautiful, it’s cared for.
A Village with Heart
Tucked along the northern shores of Lough Derg in County Tipperary, Terryglass blends history, nature, and community pride.
Once a monastic settlement founded by St. Columba in the 6th century, the village today is known for its scenic harbour, warm hospitality, and award-winning pubs.
You can walk by the lake, try a bit of fishing, or have a chat with someone from the village. There’s history in every corner: old wells, local festivals, and handmade crafts.
The Gold Medal Journey
According to Joe Hogan, Chairperson of Terryglass Tidy Towns, the European win brought a deep sense of pride.
“For a little village in Ireland to win Gold on the European stage is something truly special,” said Hogan. “It’s not just a win for the committee – it’s for everyone who gives their time, plants a flower, or paints a wall.”
The judging process for Entente Florale Europe is rigorous. Villages are evaluated across ten key criteria, each worth ten marks, for a total of 100 points. Achieving Gold requires at least 85 points, covering:
- Planning and development
- Built environment and heritage conservation
- Landscape and green infrastructure
- Sustainability and climate change mitigation
- Green areas and biodiversity
- Environmental education and awareness
- Effort and involvement of the community
- Tourism and leisure
- Communication and public relations
- Cooperation between local authorities and the community
Terryglass worked closely with Tipperary County Council and two assigned mentors to meet each standard. “Sustainability and climate initiatives are the toughest,” Joe Hogan explained, “but that’s where we’re heading. It’s not just about being beautiful – it’s about being responsible.”
Keeping the Spirit Alive
The Gold Medal has energised the village. “There’s a real pride of place among residents,” Joe said. “You might only represent Ireland once, so to win at this level inspires everyone. It lifts morale and brings more people on board.”
Terryglass continues to enter the national TidyTowns competition each year, keeping up the same dedication that made it a European winner. The award has strengthened community participation and inspired a renewed sense of purpose.
What Makes Terryglass Stand Out
What sets Terryglass apart is its authenticity. The village has retained its old-world charm – unspoiled by overdevelopment or modernisation. Ancient stone walls, traditional cottages, and lush greenery form the heart of its landscape.
“There are no big monuments or modern structures,” Hogan said. “It’s natural, simple, and true to itself.”
With the River Shannon nearby, Terryglass is a haven for boating and angling. The blend of stone, green spaces, and flowers gives the village its signature look – understated yet deeply cared for.
Looking Ahead to 2026
After such a major win, Terryglass isn’t resting on its laurels. Plans for 2026 focus on environmental protection and the careful management of wooded and green areas around the village.
“We need to appreciate what we have and protect it,” said Joe Hogan. “Our goal is to maintain balance – progress without losing the natural beauty that defines Terryglass.”
Discover Terryglass
For those inspired to visit, Joe recommends exploring the churchyard, home to a unique cemetery reminiscent of those in Belgium, with identical headstones that create a striking sense of peace.
The harbour is another highlight – ideal for fishing, swimming, or simply enjoying the stillness of Lough Derg.
Small and easy to explore on foot, Terryglass offers local dining, friendly pubs, and scenic walks perfect for a relaxing day out. “It’s a tranquil place,” Joe added. “That’s what people love about it – you can stroll, sit by the water, and just breathe.”
