Things To Do In Kilkee On A Bank Holiday Weekend

One of our team members recently took a well-earned break this May Bank Holiday and headed west with her family to Kilkee. It was a long-overdue trip -and worth the wait! They returned full of stories, sea air, and the feeling they should have gone years ago. Here is her personal account of the best things to do in Kilkee:

Friday – Arriving in Kilkee

We arrived in Kilkee on Friday evening and checked into Moore Bay Holiday Homes for a weekend stay. We were in No. 7C – a lovely, bright, and airy house, fully stocked with everything you would need for a comfortable self-catering break.

Getting to the right door in the dark was a bit of a maze, but once inside, we were delighted. The place was clean, well-equipped, and had a relaxed holiday feel that set the tone for the weekend.

Saturday – Cliffs, Surf Towns & A Swim in the Pollock Holes

We started the day with the Kilkee Cliff Walk – a truly stunning trail along the edge of the Atlantic. The views were incredible, and we were lucky to have dry weather. On our way back, we stopped at the Diamond Rocks CafĂ© for coffee and a rest.

Later, we took a scenic drive through Doonbeg, Quilty, and Lahinch, stopping at Lahinch to watch the surfers ride the waves and grab a coffee. After that, we made our way to Doolin, where we visited the lovely souvenir shops.

Back in Kilkee, we kept an eye on the tide and then headed straight to the Pollock Holes for a swim – what an experience! The water was fresh, and the natural rock pools were the perfect place to cool off.

For dinner, we headed to Naughtons for seafood. The atmosphere was amazing, and the food was fabulous – recommend booking in advance! On the way home, we decided to stop at The Medical Hall Pub for a drink, but unfortunately, we were not allowed in because we had an under-21 with us. Still, it did not stop us from having a great evening.

Sunday – Markets, Alpacas & Exploring Loop Head

Sunday morning started with a walk around Kilkee’s charming lanes and streets. We stumbled upon an open-air market where we browsed everything from cakes to fishing tackle. Breakfast was at The Pantry, where we enjoyed some healthy options to fuel up for the day.

We then walked up to the Kilkee Golf Club and explored the cliffs on that side of town. We stopped at Burns Cove to watch some brave swimmers enjoying the calm waters of the sheltered cove.

Flying Alpacas Experience in Kilkee

In the afternoon, we had a memorable experience meeting Fred, Magic, and Pancake, the alpacas, at Flying Alpacas. The owners, Barbara, and Michael, are so passionate about what they do, and it was a real treat to get up close to the alpacas. Don’t miss out- if you’re heading to Kilkee, check out our special Flying Alpaca offer!

Next, we drove out to Loop Head, as far as Kilbaha, and stopped at Keatings Bar for lunch. It was packed, so we could not get in, but the vibe was fantastic. We continued on to Carrigaholt for the Oyster Festival. The streets were filled with people, food stalls, and music at Keane’s Bar – definitely a lively stop!

Back in Kilkee, we stopped by Naughtons Yard – a newer development with a cafĂ©, art gallery, and an Airstream food truck serving local seafood and smash burgers. Unfortunately, there were no tables available, so we ended up at Myles Creek – a quieter spot compared to the rest of town. The trad session in the bar next door added some atmosphere.

We ended the night at O’Maras, a local favourite. It had a great vibe with music and a nice mix of people of all ages.

Monday – Farewell Coffee & Ocean Views

On Monday morning, we returned to Diamond Rocks Café for one last breakfast with stunning ocean views before we packed up and headed home.

Kilkee has so much to offer, especially for families. It is easy to pack a cooler box, head to the beach or cliffs, and walk for miles while taking in all the fresh air and scenic beauty. I honestly cannot believe it took me 18 years to finally visit!
